Abstract
23,491. Heinze, J. O. Feb. 24, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Electric locomotives and motor vehicles ; rope railways and tramways. - Wheels are built up of two or more independent electromagnets, the poles of every electromagnet being at the peripheries of the wheels. The application to a pair of railway vehicle wheels is described. A ribbed circular plate a, Fig. 3, has a number of yokes a<1> around which are wound copper wires a<2>, and insulated sector plates a<3> ht over and are bolted to them, the whole forming a flanged wheel. On the axle B is mounted the commutator b<1> having a number of metallic segments b<3>, b<4>, each pair of which compose the terminals of an electric circuit. One end of each of the wires a' of the wheel A is connected to its proper segment b<3>, while the other ends are twisted into a coil a<5>, which is passed through the commutator and, after untwisting, is passed round the yokes of the wheel A', the various wires being connected to the proper segments b<4>. The segments b<3>, b<4> contact with the brushes b<5>, b<6>, and the electric current for magnetizing the various sections of the wheel is supplied by the battery b. In a modification, a solid ring is used in lieu of the plates a<3>, while the coils around the yokes are connected in series. A metallic rope, partially or wholly encircling the tread of the wheel, may be used instead of the rail.
