Abstract

11,874. Thompson, W. P., [Simonini, A.]. June 30. Lighting gas; vapour tamps.-Relates tu catalytic igniters for incandescent and other burners in which the glow from a starting - pellet A, composed mainly of platinum black, is transmitted successively through a series of incinerated threads B, C, D, which have been so prepared as to glow successively at increasing temperatures until the ignition is effected. The thread B, which has a platinum wire woven or secured in it, is treated with a solution containing from 75 to 90 per cent. of thorium nitrate, and from 25 to 10 per cent. of platinum chloride. The two or more threads C with similarly-attached platinum wires are treated with a solution of platinum chloride alone, which results in a deposit of porous platinum on the platinum wires after the threads have been incinerated. The two or more threads D, which actually effect the ignition, are treated with a solution containing about 98¢ per cent. of thorium nitrate, 1 per cent. of cerium nitrate, and ¢ per cent. of platinum chloride. When the gas or vapour impinges upon the igniter, the glow from the preliminary heater A is transmitted successively through the threads B, C to the igniting-threads D. The percentages of the ingredients used may be varied, and the platinum may be replaced by another metal of the platinum group.
