Abstract

172,302. Frank, F. Dec. 1, 1920, [Convention date]. Sulphur.-Materials are subjected in a closed chamber in which a partial vacuum is maintained to the direct action of a flame produced by burning a combustible mixture of gases containing oxygen in certain predetermined amounts so as to distil off volatile constituents and otherwise subject the materials to a heat treatment. By this method sulphur may be obtained direct from sulphur-bearing ores. The material is fed from a measuring wheel 32 rotated at constant speed into a casing 28 enclosing a conveyer screw 25. The hollow shaft 26 of the conveyer screw has apertures 35 and forms an outlet pipe for the volatile matter, this shaft being secured to. brackets 27 attached to the retort 10 whereby the shaft and conveyer rotate with the retort. A gas burner 50 projects a flame on to the material as it passes through the retort. The residue is lifted by arms 60 attached to the retort and dropped into a casing 61 enclosing a screw conveyer 64 mounted in a hollow tube 65 containing the pipe 52 leading to the burner, and is moved into a rotating discharge wheel 73 communicating with an outlet 70 leading into a tank 72. The volatiles are carried off by a fan 40 and passed into a settling chamber 42.
