Ordnance, built-up; design.-The barrel of a field gun is lengthened without imparing ease of transport by providing extension tube E connected by interrupted screw-threads e to the barrel proper A and rotatably mounted within a sleeve D itself hinged at b to the gun barrel. On releasing a catch f, the extension may be unscrewed, drawn forwards, and swung over on to the top of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 4. In this position the gun is ready for transport, or it may be fired without the extension tube.
