Abstract

Electrodes; electrolytes.-A battery consists of carbon and zinc electrodes in an alkaline electrolyte in the form of paste, the depolarizer consisting of a permanganate, manganate, or manganic acid either alone or mixed with any other depolarizing agent. The permanganate &c. may be used in solid or fluid condition. In the former case it may be contained in a textile sack arranged round the positive electrode. When used in the fluid condition it is contained in a porous cylinder. In an example, the positive electrode contains the depolarizer in powdered form and consists of a rod containing 2 parts of potassium permanganate and 1 part of graphite. This is placed with a zinc electrode in a 25 per cent solution of caustic potash thickened with flour &c.
