Abstract

Uniting and perforating or dividing by fusion.- In an apparatus for electric arc welding or cutting under water, the electrode is movably mounted in a bell applied to the work and from which the water is forced out by compressed air. In the form shown, the bell A, which carries an annular brush N of wire or layers of gauze to press against the work and has an observation window M, is provided with a screwed fitting B, having an annular passage, which is connected to the bell by ports B<4> and to a source of compressed air through a valved branch pipe B<1> connected to the supply-pipe D. The electrode C, which is insulated from the bell by a rubber washer E, is held in a split tube G mounted in a tubular member F. which is connected to the fitting B by a fairly stiff flexible tube L of rubber or other insulating- material so that the electrode may be moved relatively to the bell and work. The tube G is separated from the member F by an insulating- plug H and is held in contact with the cable J, which is mounted in insulating-packing K secured in the member F by a screwed gland F<1>. For acting on irregular surfaces the brushes N may be spring-mounted.
