Abstract

161,008. Siepmann, E. Jan 27, 1920. Disc apparatus.-Knives are polished by means of a wooden or other polishing disc 33 carried by an axially movable spindle 37 which is engaged at its rear end by a spring-pressed centre point 38, polishing-material being supplied to the disc from a container 34 by means of a revolving brush 35. The knife is supported by pins 25, on a resilient backing carried by a holder 22 pivoted on pins 21 on a cross-slide 20 movable to and from the polishing-disc on a slide 11 which is reciprocated, to carry the knife across the face of the disc, by rack-and-pinion gearing driven through gearing 3 - - 6 by two oppositely-driven pulleys 1, 2. Reversal of the motion of the slide 11 is brought about by a slidable clutch 8 moved by a lever 18 pivoted at 18', the lever being thrown over by means of a handle 17, against the action of a spring 46, to start the slide and being moved to throw over the clutch 8, at the end of the inward stroke, by the engagement of a cam 15 on the lever by a roller 13. The roller is carried by a bracket 12 mounted on the slide, and the bracket also carries a pin 14 which, towards the end of the outward stroke of the slide, engages a cam 16 on the lever and rocks this, against the action of the spring 46, to set the clutch 8 in the neutral position; the slide thus makes one to-and-fro movement and then comes to rest. In order to give convexity to the knife blade, the holder 22 has thereon an arm 26 which rides on a bar 27 pivoted to a fork 29 and adjustable, by means of screws 28, to different inclinations; the fork is reciprocated vertically and the knife holder is thus rocked on its pivots. The cross-slide 20 is moved on the slide 11 by the engagement of a pin 43 on the crossslide by the bevelled part of a cam 41 pivoted on the slide 11 and adapted to be rocked by contact with adjustable stops 42, 44; springs 45 normally hold the cross-slide away from the polishing-disc.
