Bottles, washing.-The bottles are carried by a conveyer chain through a hot-water tank so as to be filled with water and then subjected to a blast of compressed air by inserted nozzles, whereby the impurities are blown out, the endless conveyer carrying the bottles one-and-a-half times round the conveyer circuit so that the bottles are first exposed to the action of the steam above the hot water, then filled with water and subjected to the air blast, after which the bottles are re-filled with water, carried round in an inverted position and removed from the tank to a rinsing-machine. In the arrangement shown, the bottles are fed from a tray 23 into the alternate links 5 of a conveyer band 4 which is operated intermittently so as to convey the bottles in the direction of the arrow. During this movement, they are heated by the steam at the top of the tank before immersion under the water. When positioned under the funnels 51, nozzles 42 communicating through a flexible pipe 43 with an air tank 40 supplied by a compressor 39 are inserted into the bottles by the operation of a lever 46 actuated by a cam on the shaft 20. A valve is then opened, and a jet of compressed air supplied through the nozzles blows the impurities out of each bottle. After this cleaning operation, the conveyer carries the bottles round the wheels 6, 7 and opposite a discharging device 33, which is operated from the shaft 20, to eject them on to a tray 35. This tray is then tilted, and the bottles pass down an inclined guide 50 to a rinsing-wheel 57. The trays 23, 35 are operated by links and levers 25 - - 28 and 36, 37 from the shafts 20, 17 respectively.
