Abstract
164,867. Sturgeon, R. A. March 18, 1920. Density separators; discharging.-In a separating-apparatus relative motion is obtained for discharge purposes, between the chamber and its end wall by the variation of the pressure produced by centrifugal force in a liquid admitted to the space between the movable member and an end cover fixed to the shaft. The chamber B, Fig. 1, has an integral end wall C and can move axially within the fixed dome E, the end C acting as a piston or being connected to the dome by annular diaphragms. The lower end of the chamber engages an annular seating D<1> on the face of the end cover D fixed on the shaft A. Liquid is admitted by the pipe F to the space between the dome E and the chamber end C, and the pressure keeps the chamber upon its seating. The liquid to be treated enters the upper end of the hollow shaft, passes through the openings A<1> over the weir A<2> into the chamber B, and after depositing its solids upon the chamber wall escapes through openings H in the end D and flows into a channel in the foundation of the apparatus. To discharge the solids, the supply of liquid through the pipe F is stopped, and as the liquid passes through the openings E<3> the pressure on the end C diminishes until the springs D<2> raise the chamber B, which is then swilled out to discharge the deposited solids. A filter 0 of any suitable material may be arranged in the chamber as shown. In a modification the chamber is integral with the shaft and the lower end plate is movable and is held in by the pressure of liquid supplied through the pipe F. Two separate sets of openings for the discharge of clarified liquids of different specific gravities are made in the shaft and are separated by a baffle. In another modification a receptacle M, Fig. 3, for grease recovery is placed at the lower end of the shaft; the grease passes through discharge openings M<1> in the shaft into the vessel M and the clarified liquid passes into the annual conduit N. The solids are swilled out as in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1.
