Abstract
1531976 Grafting pre-formed polymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 12 Nov 1975 [13 Nov 1974 (3)] 46738/75 Headings C3K C3M C3P and C3R Graft copolymers are formed by reaction between (A) a trunk copolymer of at least two polymerizable monomers, at least one of which contains amine-reactive sites selected from an anhydride group, a vicinal pair of carboxyl groups and a carboxyl group adjacent to a C 1-20 alkoxy-carbonyl group, and at least one of which is free from such sites and (B) at least one side-chain polymer (from a given list) containing one primary or secondary amine group, the remainder of said polymer being substantially unreactive with said amine-reactive sites. Reaction between (A) and (B) may be effected in the melt or in solution, and more than one (B) reactant may be used so as to form a product with different side-chains. In examples, the following reactants are used:- trunk co-polymers: ethylene/maleic anhydride, ethylene/monoethyl maleate, ethylene/monobutyl itaconate, ethylene/methyl acrylate/monoethyl maleate, ethylene/vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride, ethylene/ethyl acrylate/allyl acrylate/ maleic anhydride, ethylene/ethyl acrylate/ethylene diacrylate/maleic anhydride, ethylene/vinyl acetate/monomethyl maleate, ethylene/3- methylbutene/maleic anhydride, styrene/maleic anhydride, ethyl acrylate/maleic anhydride, ethyl acrylate/monoethyl fumarate, ethyl acrylate/butyl acrylate/monoethyl fumarate, and EPDM(maleic anhydride adduct; and sidechain copolymers (all amine-terminated): various nylons derived from caprolactam or laurolactam or mixtures thereof, polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, polypivalolactone, polystyrenes polymethyl methacrylate used alone, and the following used in sequence: polycaprolactam + polyethylene oxide, polymethyl methacrylate + polyethylene oxide, polystyrene + polyethylene oxide, and polymethyl methacrylate + polystyrene. Applications.-The above products may be blended with other materials for various purposes. In Examples, (34-35) grafts from nylons and ethylene/vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride or ethylene/3-methylbutene/maleic anhydride copolymers are added to hydrogenated wood rosin ester to form adhesives; (40) a graft from ethylene/3-methylbutene/maleic anhydride and polyethylene oxide is blended with polypropylene, and the blend melt spun to form an anti-static fibre; (45, 48-51) blends are formed of PVC and grafts of ethylene/vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer with polymethylmethacrylate; and (69 and 71) blends are formed of polyethylene, nylon-66 (or polycaprolactam), and grafts from ethylene/maleic anhdride copolymer and polycaprolactam.
