Abstract
1531131 Foam laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 March 1976 [18 April 1975] 16065/75 Heading B5N A laminate having a foam core sandwiched between and bonded to two outer facings is produced by applying, e.g. by spraying, to a lower facing 1, e.g. of paper, a liquid foamforming composition 11, e.g. a polyurethane, bringing an upper facing 3, e.g. of paper, into contact with the foam-forming composition at a position where substantially no expansion has occurred and maintaining the upper facing in contact with the foam throughout the zone in which expansion takes place by applying gaseous pressure to the upper surface of the upper facing and then allowing the expanded foam to cure. Gaseous pressure may be applied using air heated to 50-120C. The upper facing may be applied to the foam-forming composition using a pair of nip rolls, one below the lower facing and one above the upper facing. Alternatively, the lower roll may be replaced by a fixed bar or plate, and the upper roll replaced by a resiliently mounted bar. The expansion zone may comprise fixed platens 6 heated by electric blankets 7, a vacuum being obtained at the lower facing surface by means of a vacuum box 8, connected to a vacuum pump so that gas is drawn through holes in the surfaces of platens 6. The means for supplying gaseous pressure may consist of one or more hoods 10 extending in total over substantially the whole of the area of the laminate in the foam expansion zone and having perforated bases, the flow of gas to each hood being controlled by valves 13. Each hood is freely rotatable about axis BB and is freely movable vertically under the influence of increased gas pressure. The hoods may be weighted or counter-balanced to produce the desired loading by air cylinders 12. The gas flow rate and pressure may be chosen so that each hood floats on a gas cushion on top of the upper facing surface, the major portion of the gas exiting along the ends of the hoods. Flexible skirts, or linkages may be provided between adjacent hoods.
