Abstract

1530461 Spot-type disc brakes; rattlepreventing GENERAL MOTORS FRANCE 25 Feb 1976 [28 Feb 1975] 8637/75 Heading F2E A movable-caliper disc brake assembly 1 intended for a motor vehicle comprises a disc 2 Fig. 1, a stationary carrier bracket 4, Fig. 4, located wholly to one side (in use, the inboard side) of the disc, a caliper 8, Fig. 3, straddling the disc and slidably supported between carrier bracket arms 6 by a pin 48 at each end, Fig. 3, each pin 48 fitting into opposed grooves 40, 38, respectively in slidably contacting abutment surfaces in the caliper 8 and in the adjacent bracket arm respectively, and a pair of brake shoes 18, 20, Fig. 1, mounted on opposite sides of the disc 2 within a close aperture 16 in the caliper 8 and arranged to transmit braking torque by contacting one of two circumferentially-spaced end portions of the caliper adjacent the aperture. As shown, the end portion of the caliper above referred to is one of the circumferentiallyspaced end margins 16a of the aperture, which is rectangular; the brake shoes are supported by pins 24, 26, supported by axially-spaced side portions, Fig. 6, of the caliper material surrounding the aperture. Preferably each shoe-supporting pin is a longitudinally-split cylinder of resilient metal to prevent rattle and bears, at the reaction side 12 of the caliper, against a shoulder 67, Fig. 6; each shoe pinengaging hole is slotted circumferentially. Preferably each caliper-supporting pin 48 is an assembly comprising a pin proper (50), (Fig. 4A, not shown) having a head (52) bearing against the disc side of the bracket 4 and a lock washer 58, Figs. 1, 4, at the other end; the pin proper (50) is surrounded by a split spring cylinder (56) to prevent rattle. In Fig. 7 (not shown), a single longer pinengaging hole in the shoe encompasses both pins 24, 26, and includes a spring hooked over both pins; the hole and spring are differentlyshaped in Fig. 8 (not shown).
