Abstract

1529925 Silencing 2-stroke I C engines TEXTRON INC 17 Jan 1976 01869/76 Heading F1B In order to reduce exhaust noise from a twostroke spark ignition I.C. engine, the exhaust port 7 is formed in the shape of an inverted "T" (considering the engine in a cylinder head uppermost position) with a wider base portion 8 and narrower stem portion 9. The slot base 8b is at BDC while the top 8a of the base portion 8 is at the same level as the top of a transfer port (not shown). The stem 9 extends upwards a distance equivalent to the piston movement obtained by 20 degrees-55 degrees crankshaft movement from the top 8a of the base portion 8. The stem 9 may have an upper 9a and lower 9b part, the lower part 9b is of uniform width, whilst the upper part 9a may be of greater or smaller width than the lower part 9b. The specification sets forth preferred dimensions for the exhaust port. Exhaust port 7 discharges through a short pentagonal conduit 10 into a silencer (not shown).
