Abstract

1529738 Cracking crude oil UNION CARBIDE CORP 5 Feb 1976 [6 Feb 1975] 04492/76 Heading C5E Crude oil is cracked to provide lower olefins in a system comprising an atomization zone, a mixing zone, an adiabatic reaction zone and a quenching zone, at least the first three of these having a common axis by a process comprising:-(a) introducing into the mixing zone in a direction approximately perpendicular to said axis, a mixture of combustion gases produced from the essentially complete combustion of a fuel gas and oxygen mixed together with steam, at a subsonic velocity and an inlet temperature of 1000‹ C. to 2400‹ C. (b) introducing crude oil into the upstream end of the atomization zone in a downstream axial direction and in such a manner that crude oil is converted into droplets in the atomization zone; (c) passing the droplets of crude oil from the atomization zone into the gases in the mixing zone in a downstream axial direction in a ratio of 0À5 to 1 part by weight of crude oil per part by weight of gases and in such a manner that essentially all of the crude oil vaporizes into the gases in said mixing zone; (d) passing the effluent from the mixing zone into the reaction zone which has an outlet temperature of 600-1100‹ C., a pressure of 3-30 psig and the residence time is 6-60 milliseconds; (e) passing the effluent from (d) to a quenching zone which stops the reaction essentially instantaneously from which the product olefins are recovered. The system may also comprise a burner zone where the combustion gases are produced, the combustion gases being passed to the mixing zone through a restricted throat section which has the effect of accelerating the gases passing through.
