Abstract

1528774 Laminates G S VESNITSKAYA E M GERASIMOVA E F MARKINA J I KNYAZEVA M M GUDIMOV G N PLATONOVA and A V KORJUKIN 28 Oct 1975 44436/75 Heading B5N A laminate is produced by applying on to the surface of a glass-like transparent plastics material, e.g. of polycarbonate or polyacrylate, a semi-transparent first coating of an inorganic substance by thermal evaporation under vacuum, applying a second coating of a colourless inorganic substance semitransparent to visible light over the first coating also by thermal evaporation under vacuum, and by means of an adhesive applying to the glass-like transparent plastics material provided with the two coatings a layer of glass-like transparent plastics material having no such coatings, the second coating being of a material different from that of the first coating and protecting the first coating from the adhesive. Bonding may be effected by applying an adhesive layer of polyvinyl ethylol on to the entire surface of the glass-like transparent plastics material having such coatings and only on to those areas of the glass-like transparent plastics material having such coatings where the inorganic coating is absent, assembling the two sheets of glass with a polyvinylbutyral film therebetween and pressing the assembly in an autoclave at a temperature of 98‹-150‹ C. and pressure of 3-18 atm. The first coating which may be 5-500 nm thick may have light, heat and radio reflecting and electrical conductivity properties and may comprise a metal, metal oxide or metal salt of a mineral acid. The coat obtained by using sulphides or selenides may be subsequently processed in vapours of sulphur or selenium. The second coating which may have a thickness of 50-1000 nm may comprise non- metals, oxides of metals or non-metals or salts of metals and mineral acids. The assembly may be placed into a rubber bag, evacuated and pressed to obtain bonding. In examples polycarbonate glass-like material is coated first with cuprous sulphide and then with lithium fluoride, optionally after treatment with sulphur vapour, and polymethyl methacrylate glass-like material is coated first with aluminium and then with magnesium fluoride or germanium or first with gold and then with silicon dioxide or titanium oxide.
