Abstract

1527355 Releasable pipe couplings B F T EKMAN 28 Oct 1975 [30 Oct 1974] 44464/75 Heading F2G A pipe connector, e.g. for connecting an hydraulic system to a pressure measuring device, comprises a spigot 3 and a socket 1 having channels 13, 7 respectively closed by spring- loaded balls 14, 8 and a push rod 19, e.g. of stainless steel, held captive within but axially movable of the socket 1 such that on forming the connection the rod 19 lifts the balls 14, 8 from their seats 15, 9 to allow fluid flow. The rod 19 has four regions of differing diameter the widest of which forms a flange that cooperates with a cavity 26 in a sleeve 31 screwthreaded into the socket 1 in order to retain the rod 19 but allow it limited axial movement. The different regions of the rod 19 have lengths that ensure that both balls 14, 8 are lifted from the seats 15, 9 irrespective of the relative strengths of the springs 16, 10. Grooves or recesses extend axially of the rod 19 at least over the two central regions to allow fluid flow. A seal 30 is positioned in the socket 1. An outer sleeve 6 and locking balls secure the spigot 3 and socket 1. Hollow screwthreaded spigots 4, 2 are positioned at the ends of the spigot and socket for connection to pipes. Holding screws 17, 11 with bores 18, 12 are screwthreaded in the spigots 4, 2 to retain the springs 16, 10.
