Abstract

1527111 Thermal regenerators BRITISH STEEL CORP 3 Feb 1976 [4 Feb 1975] 4748/75 Heading F4K Refractory brickwork with through passages therein and comprising the heat transfer material in a thermal regenerator is arranged as a plurality of sets 29 spaced apart one above another and each set is supported by individual support means at least one of which comprises pipes connected to a source of coolant (e.g. steam). In the arrangement shown in which each set comprises two layers 30 separated by spacing means 31, the individual support means for the upper set comprises horizontal portions of pipes 20. For the remaining sets the support means comprises pipes 24 which are supported along the central axis of the regenerator on annular platforms 25 secured to rings 26 which encircle as a column, vertical portions of the pipes 20. Both the pipes 20 and 24 ,which may have an external covering of refractory material, may be cooled by steam which is subsequently used for electric power generation. Intermediate support structures 27 comprising flat spirals are positioned between the brickwork sets and the support means 20, 24. The regenerator shown comprises a hot-blast stove with a combustion chamber 13 and reversing valves 14, 19 which operate together to direct alternately through the mass, combustion gases from the chamber 13 which pass ultimately to a stack 17, and combustion air from an inlet 18 which after heating is directed at 21 to a blast furnace 16 is a temperature sensor acting to initiate reversal of the valves 14, 19. Waste heat boilers (not shown) may be positioned in the stack 17.
