Abstract

1524022 InBatable protector P W BOTHWELL 11 Aug 1975 [10 May 1974] 15821/74 Heading A3V [Also in Division B7] An inflatable impact-absorbing protector comprising at least one deformable, normally deflated chamber 14, 15 includes an emitter 20 emitting a signal to a receiver 23 when a detector e.g. inertia sensor 19 detects excessive acceleration or deceleration, the receiver 23 then operating means to inflate the chamber or chambers. Receiver 23 operates a switching circuit (24) to supply current from power supply (25) to igniter (26) which ignites solid fuel pyrotechnic gas generators 16, 17 embedded in structure 11 to inflate bags 14, 15 on the external surface of structure 11 to protect the wearer's head, neck, chest and face. Emitter 20 emits short range radio, heat, light or hypersonic waves in a beam R towards the protector. Receiver 23 may respond to only a predetermined frequency which may be preset on the emitter. In motor vehicles or aircraft, the inflating means includes a gas cylinder mounted on the vehicle or aircraft and connected to the protector by a supply line including a normally closed valve opened by a pyrotechnic device or squib fired by the receiver which receives signals from the remotely-mounted emitter. A single emitter may control a number of protectors. The two or more chambers may have individual or common inflating means, receivers and emitters.
