Abstract

1523720 Suppression of induced currents in cables DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 2 Dec 1975 [3 Dec 1974] 52320/74 Heading H1A For suppressing currents in the sheath of a cable such as are induced, e.g. by lightning, a cable has fitted to its sheath 1 a number of rings 9 which will reflect electro-magnetic energy passing along the sheath, spaces between rings 9 being filled by sleeves 10 of a material which will effectively absorb the energy as it is reflected back and forth between adjacent rings 9. A ring may be of a material having a non-linear voltage-current characteristic, and may have a thin metal layer 11 on its outwardly directed face. The sleeve 10 may exhibit domain wall resonance absorbtion and may consist of ferrite particles held in silicone ruber or epoxy resin. The induced current will thus be prevented from reaching equipment 2, 3 at the ends of the cable.
