Abstract

1520082 Mixing apparatus BUSS AG 14 May 1976 20096/76 Heading B1C [Also in Division F4] In a method of treating a pasty substance by evaporation of diluent or solvent under reduced pressure an apparatus comprises a container 1 having heating jackets 7 and a horizontal shaft 6 through which heat exchange fluid is also passed, the ratio of the heating surfaces of the housing and shaft being in the range 60:40 to 52:48. The shaft carries at each end a simple agitator arm 22, and an agitator arm 21 having an end scraper 37 (see also Fig. 8, not shown). There are also agitator arms 20, 20' which have mixing and scraping paddles (30, 31, 32, Figs. 3-6, not shown) -arranged to move the material axially and radially. The paddles are oppositely angled so that during operation the materials are urged towards the ends of the container while during discharge the shaft rotation is reversed and they urge the materials towards the discharge port 4. The agitator arms are elliptical in crosssection and their hollow interiors are in communication with the interior of the shaft, the ends of which also carry scrapers 23. The entire surface of the container is thus scraped. There is a loose agitator 14 in the form of a tube (see Fig. 7, not shown) extending the length of the container which prevents balling and clumping and is driven by contact with the agitator arms.
