Abstract
1519516 Dental teaching apparatus KALTENBACK & VOIGT 16 Sept 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 38103/75 Heading G5G A dental teaching apparatus comprises a dummy head 1 mounted at one end of a support 2 similar in form to the backrest of a dental treatment chair, which support is adjustable vertically 5, and also in inclination 6 about a horizontal pivot 3. The backrest may be additionally provided with a separate headrest (8, Figs. 3, 4, not shown), also pivotable about a horizontal axis. The dummy head may be supported by a ball-and-socket joint on an extension (Fig. 3, not shown), but preferably by a ball-and-socket joint where the rear of the head forms the ball. The ball-and-socket may be formed with flattened surfaces (Fig. 7) to aid positioning of the head. The ball-andsocket are preferably secured together by one of the following: they may both have friction coatings 13; one or both may have suction cups (Fig. 8); the socket may be provided with a diaphragm forming one large suction cup (Fig. 5); or the ball and/or socket may be at least in part of magnetic material and the socket provided with an electromagnet (Fig. 6) operated by a hand or foot switch. The rear of the head is preferably formed with markings to enable accurate orientation of the head, and is provided with beading 23 to constrain the movement thereof. Preferably a structure (29) is formed on the support to simulate the patient's body.
