Fig. 1 shows how the yarn guide 2 can be moved to a setting in which as the yarn guide 4 travels in the orbit shown by the arrow 8 the yarn 5 can be caused, as shown in broken line, to engage the yarn guide 2 and slide down and off a curved end thereof so as to extend across the end face of the winding spindle 1. In Fig. 1, the spindle 1 is hollow and is connected to a suction source 9. The cut end of the yarn is thus drawn into the spindle 1. In place of the suction means for holding the .yarn end across the end face of the spindle 1 there may be gripping means 13, Fig. 1, that can be pressed against the end face of the spindle, the gripping means 13 being designed to permit the yarn to flow across said end face. In a further embodiment Fig. 2a (not shown) the end face of the spindle has pins that are parallel to the axis of the winding spindle. In a further embodiment the winding spindle comprises an opening and closing framework, Fig. 3 (not shown), and hooked pins (41) are provided at the free end of the spindle such that when the framework is collapsed for the doffing of the wound skein the cut yarn end is automatically pulled into the core of the wound skein by the hooked pins.
