Abstract
1517931 Portable containers AMERICAN CAN CO 12 Aug 1975 33507/75 Heading B8D [Also in Divisions C3 and B3] To avoid the formation of cracks when seaming a metal closure 14 to the end of a metal container body 12 having a substantially axial grain direction, a curl 34, Fig. 6, is formed at the end of the body 12, sealant 32, Fig. 2, is applied to the closure and/or body 12, and a double seam is formed to withstand 90 p.s.i. at 140‹ F. The diameter of the curl is less than the width of an equivalent conventional flange so that the body is subject to less stretching. Curls may be formed by rolling or with a die on steel or aluminium bodies of less than 0À006 inches thickness for an axially seamed body and less than 0À0057 inches thickness for a seamless drawn and ironed body. For a seamless body of aluminium the thickness may be 0À0048 inches and for steel 0À0038 inches. The body may be heat treated and/or coated with acetlacetonates, modified epoxies, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers, polyethylenes or combinations thereof. Suitable thermoplastic adhesives for the seam are those based on an ethylene acetate terpolymer, a butadiene-styrene-block copolymer, and a polyamide polymer. Synthetic rubber based on styrene-butadiene co-polymer may be used. Compositions are given in the Specification.
