Abstract

1517767 Binders for water-dilutable paints VIANOVAKUNSTHARZAG 11 Dec 1975 [17 Dec 1974] 50879/75 Headings C3R and C3B Binders for water-dilutable paints are prepared by (a) reacting from 8 to 50% by weight of an amine-formaldehyde condensate which is at least partially etherified with a C1-4 monohydric alcohol with from 50 to 92% by weight of a monomethoxypolyethylene glycol of M.W. from 300 to 2000 and (b) condensing the product from (a) with at least part of an alkyd or epoxy resin ester component until the product exhibits optimum dilutability in water whereafter any remaining alkyd or epoxy resin ester component is added, the total proportions of components employed in (b) being from 5 to 30% by weight of the reaction product from (a) and 70 to 95% by weight of the alkyd resin or epoxy resin ester. In the preparation of the modified amine-formaldehyde condensate, the monomethoxypolyethylene glycol may be used in conjunction with a non-etherified polyethylene glycol and/or a monohydric alcohol having from 4 to 42 carbon atoms. In typical examples, (i) hexamethoxymethyl melamine is reacted with a fat alcohol of linseed oil fatty acids and methoxy-polyethylene glycol and the product so formed is condensed with an alkyd resin derived from tall oil fatty acids, pentaerythritol and phthalic anhydride and (7) hexamethoxymethyl melamine is reacted with trimethylolpropane-diallyl ether and methoxypolyethylene glycol and this product is condensed with an epoxy resin ester derived from an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A, linoleic fatty acid and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride.
