Abstract

151,683. Macdonald, S. June 13, 1919. Combustion-product engines.-A combustionproduct engine comprises a displacer cylinder D not functioning as a heat-exchanger, a regenerator A maintained by heat from the exhaust gases of combustion at a temperature varying from a maximum at one end to a minimum at the other, and means for supplying, during the working cycle, an additional source of heat energy in the form of a hydrocarbon or carburetted air. In one form, the displacer piston P is connected to the crank-shaft Z about 90 degrees ahead of the power piston Q, and, on the upstroke, draws air through a valve K, and forces it on the downstroke through a valve L and the regenerator A into the cylinder D, where it meets a charge of hydrocarbon admitted through a valve 0. The mixture is fired bv the heated air and actuates the piston Q. On the return stroke of the piston Q the hot products of combustion are forced through the regenerator and the exhaust valve M. In a modification, the valve 0 is dispensed with and carburetted air is drawn in at K and forced through the regenerator by the piston P. In this case the charge may be drawn from a receiver into which it has been compressed by the under side of the piston Q. In another form, the regenerator is jacketed and the products of combustion are discharged through an exhaust valve and then pass to the jacket. The exhaust gases may be passed through a second cylinder before being exhausted.
