Abstract

1515275 Electrostatic precipitators OMNIA (ENG) Ltd 22 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 45804/74 Heading B2J In an electrostatic precipitator in which gas to be cleaned enters via inlet tube 10 into one or more axially aligned metal ducts 3 in which an ionizing field is present, the precipitate collecting walls of the ducts 3 are thermoelectrically cooled to such a low temperature that the precipitate is collected on the duct walls by being entrained in ice or frost formed thereon. As shown, the ionizing field is formed by applying a high voltage D.C. potential between the ducts and a discharge wire centrally mounted within the ducts, the P-N thermoelectric cooling modules 1 are mounted on the ducts 3 by metal pads, and the gas after passing through the ducts 3 flows through side ports 6 and back up outside the ducts 3 past the hot junctions of the thermoelectric modules 1 and through outlet opening 12. With the inlet 10 and outlet 12 connected to a common enclosure a thermosyphon gas flow can be established through the precipitator. Periodic defrosting and removal of the precipitate is accomplished by reversing the current through the thermoelectric modules to melt the ice. Alternatively or in addition, the ionization may be provided by a radiation source, e.g. an alpha particle emitter such as americium 241.
