Abstract

1509661 Seals P J GRAYDEN PTY Ltd 11 Feb 1976 5382/76 Heading F2B [Also in Division F1] Sealing around the impeller shaft of a waterring vacuum pump is provided by a rubber seal 38 carried by the shaft and contacting a radial surface 40 of a stationary member 39 to prevent water leakage when the pump is not running. When the pump is running, a partial vacuum is set up in a space 21 whereby air flows from atmosphere via a passage 43 and then between the seal 38 and the surface 40 into the space. The air flow deforms the seal 38 slightly outwardly whereby its contact with the surface 40 is reduced or eliminated. This reduces wear on the seal. Any water then leaking past the seal is drained through the passage 43.
