Abstract

1505032 Laminates SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 4 March 1976 [7 March 1975] 8641/76 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Flame-resistant paper laminates are prepared by impregnating paper substrates, e.g. kraft paper, alpha-cellulose paper, rag paper, sulphite paper, crepe paper or Mitscherlich paper, with a modified phenolic resin to obtain a residue of 30% wt. of resin on the paper, followed by drying; then superimposing the impregnated substrates and heat pressing. The modified phenolic resin is one that has been prepared by a process in which formaldehyde and a phenol or a mixture of phenol with another phenol are reacted in a first stage in a molar ratio of 1À2 : 1 to 2À5 : 1, in the presence of an inorganic base, at a pH of greater than 7 and up to 10, at 50-100‹ C. for 20 minutes to 5 hours and at least until the quantity of free HCHO remaining is reduced to 1-7 % wt. and a phenolic resole resin is produced, and reacting the resulting product in a second stage with 1 to 10% wt. of the reaction medium of at least one amino compound, e.g. urea, melamine or dicyandiamide, in the presence of a basic catalyst, at a pH of greater than 7 and up to 10, at a temperature of 20‹ to 100‹ C. for 5 minutes to 3 hours, and at least until a modified phenolic resole resin has been made with a free phenol content and free HCHO content of up to 3% and 2% respectively by weight of the reaction medium; and diluting the resulting product with methanol to a solids content of 40-60% wt. The phenol or said other phenol is preferably monohydric, e.g. phenol, cresol or xylenol. Conventional flame retardants, e.g. a halogenated alkyl polyphosphate may be added.
