Abstract
1504086 Hydrogenation of coal CITIES SERVICE CO 14 May 1976 20132/76 Heading C5E Gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons and ashcontaining char are produced by adding hot hydrogen to a stream of liquid or crushed solid carbonaceous material in a reactor and thereafter quenching the reacting mixture within the reactor with a total residence time of from 2 milliseconds to 2 seconds. Coal is mixed with hot hydrogen in a ratio of 0À05-4 pounds of hydrogen per pound of coal and reacted at 400-2000‹ C. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. prior to quenching, e.g. with hydrogen at - 150‹ or -140‹ C.; the product comprises methane to C 5 hydrocarbons and aromatics such as benzene, toluene and xylene.
