Description

(54) DISPOSABLE FILTER UNIT FOR LIQUID FUELS (71) We, ROBERT BOSCH GmbH., a German company of Postfach 50, 7000 Stuttgart 1, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention is concerned with disposable filter units for filtering liquid fuel.
Disposable filter units are known (for example, from German Offenlegungsschrift 2445454) which have a filter element in a housing which has a cover with a central threaded outlet tube which is screwed to an additional cover. Such a filter unit is relatively expensive in view of the need for a matching additional cover.
Oil filters are also known in which a cupshaped housing accommodates a paper filter element and has threaded inlet and outlet unions in its base, the filter having a releasable cover which is fixed to the housing by a central screw. Such a filter (as disclosed in German Offenlegungsschrift 1536902) is not disposable as a whole, but must be dismantled for disposal of the filter element and fitting of a new filter element.
According to the invention, there is provided a disposable filter unit for filtering liquid fuel, which comprises a wound filter element disposed in a cup-shaped housing, in which the housing has a cover non-releasably secured thereto, and, beneath the filter element. a water-collection space, the cover having therein a hollow inlet union adapted for connection to an inlet fuel line and a hollow outlet union adapted for connection to an outlet fuel line, the filter element, the inlet union and the outlet union being arranged for axial flow of liquid fuel through the filter element in use.
The filter unit is preferably provided with a fixing strip around the housing, whereby the filter unit can be readily fixed to a machine part.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, there will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, three exemplary embodiments of filter units according to the invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a first embodiment of filter unit according to the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the filter unit shown in Figure 1; and Figures 3 and 4 are partial sections through further embodiments of filter units according to the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a filter unit 10 in which a cover 12 is sealingly and non-releasably flanged to a cup-shaped housing 11. A perforated plate 14 having a central aperture therein, rests on a shoulder in the housing 11 and supports a filter element 15. The latter consists of a filter paper strip spirally wound about a central imperforate tube 16 and is fixed and sealed in the housing portion 11 by a ring of adhesive 17.
A water-collection space 18, which can be emptied by means of a discharge plug 19, is formed in the housing 11 beneath the perforated plate 14.
The cover 12 itself is formed as a flat platelike die casting in which are simply formed three bosses lying in a straight-line -as Figure 2 shows in more detail. The central boss is formed as a threaded outlet union 21 and the boss lying beside it, which is of the same size, is formed as a threaded inlet union 22, whilst the remaining boss accepts a ventilating screw 23. Thus, the threaded unions 21, 22 are parallel with one another. A flat sealing ring 24 is provided between the cover 12 and the central tube 16 to separate the dirty side and the clean side of the filter element from one another.
The housing 11 can be fixed by means of a -clamping strip 25 to a machine part (not shown). The clamping strip grips around the housing 11 by means of a loop section 26, which forms substantially three quarters of a circle, connected by parallel web sections 27, 28 to angled sections 29, 31. The web sections 27, 28 are clamped together by means of a bolt 32. The angled sections 29, 31 extend in one plane and each contain a hole 33. The filter unit 10 can easily be mounted on a part of a machine with the aid of the clamping strip 25, in an upright position to allow for separation of water.
In operation, fuel to be filtered passes through the inlet union 22, then axially through the filter element 15, through the perforations in the plate 14 into the space 18 and up through the centre of the tube 16 to the outlet union 21. The fuel lines can be connected directly to the threaded unions 21, 22 in the cover 12 so that an additional hous ing cover is not needed. In order to exchange the filter unit 10, the clamping bolt 32 is unscrewed, after removing the fuel lines, and the filter unit 10 is exchanged.
Figure 3 shows a portion of a second filter unit 40 which differs from that shown in Fig ure 1 in the following respects, wherein like references are used for like parts. The filter unit 40 has a cover 41 which consists of a flat steel plate 42 provided with three openings.
Tubular unions 42,43 are pressed into two of the openings until they engage the steel plate 42 by means of their flanged ends and are lying parallel to one another. The third open ing accepts the ventilation screw 23. In this instance, fuel lines formed as tubes can also be connected directly to the cover 12 with the aid of hose clips.
Figure 4 shows a portion of a third filter unit 50 which differs from that shown in Fig ure 3 by having a bored steel plate 51 into which simply formed tube unions 52, 53 are pushed and are non-releasably sealingly sol dered to the steel plate 51.
