Description

(54) TOOTH PASTE COMPOSITION (71) I, GIORGIO RIALDI of 18 Via P. Semeria, Genova, Italy, a Citizen of the Republic of Italy, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The known tooth paste compositions may be subdivided into two main groups, that is paste compositions containing only detergents (for example soaps), and compositions containing in addition to the detergents, also abrasives (for example powdered chalk). The compositions are incorporated into a cream composition basically formed by a gum, usually tragacanth, to act as a binder and stabilizer for the emulsion, and a large percentage of glycerine to act as a humectant and so improve the taste. Flavouring materials are also added to "freshen the mouth". In some preparations oxidizing agents, such as chlorate salts, are used as an aid to cleansing. However, these are always used in conjunction with abrasives and detergents.
Whilst the tooth pastes containing only detergents are capable of washing the teeth, they are not suitable for whitening the teeth.
The tooth pastes containing also abrasives are capable of a good whitening action on the teeth. Their use, however has as a consequence the abrasive wear of the tooth enamel. This is a great disadvantage since enamel, once lost, cannot be replaced except by artificial means.
It is therefore the main object of the present invention to provide a tooth paste composition which avoids or reduces the disadvantages of the known compositions, by providing a good detergent and whitening action on the teeth with little or no detrimental effect on the tooth enamel.
According to the invention a tooth paste composition comprises, in combination: a detergent base comprising a detergent, a humectant, a binder, a flavouring agent and a germicidal agent: and a mixture of micronised colloidal silica gel and activated charcoal of a grain size of from 0.2 to 0.3 microns.
Surprisingly it has been discovered that the above defined combination has a highly whitening action on the teeth, with little or no detrimental effect on the tooth enamel.
Moreover, thanks to the absorbing properties of the charcoal, the said association may absorb the fermentation products and the acidity from sugars, thus providing together with the whitening action also a caries prophylaxis action.
EXAMPLE The following is an example of tooth paste composition according to the invention. In the example, the components are given in percentage by weight.
Humectants 23-28% Binders and stabilizers 1-2% Silica/charcoal mixture 5-8% Detergents 1-3% Aromatic improver 6-9% Germicidal and antifermentative substances 0.5-1.5% Flavouring agent 0.2-0.9% Demineralised water 50-55% The silica/charcoal mixture comprises a mixture of micronised colloidal silica gel and activated charcoal of a grain size from 0.2 to 0.3 microns, the mixture being in the ratio, by weight of two parts of silica to one part of charcoal.
Surprisingly, it has been discovered that the association of activated charcoal of the specified grain size and micronised colloidal silica gel has a synergetic, highly whitening action on the teeth, with little or no detrimental effect on the teeth enamel.
Advantageously, glycyrrhizin is used as the aromatic improver, which also exerts a beneficial effect on the stability of the tooth paste composition.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A tooth paste composition comprising in combination: a detergent base comprising a detergent, a humectant, a binder, a flavouring agent and a germicidal agent; and a mixture of micronized colloidal silica gel and activated charcoal of a grain size of from 0.2 to 0.3 microns.
2. A composition according to claim 1, in which the said mixture of micronised colloidal silica gel and activated charcoal is contained in the said tooth paste composition in an amount ranging from 5%to 8%by weight based on the weight of the composition, the said silica and the said charcoal being contained in the said mixture in a ratio by weight of about two parts of silica to one part of carbon.
3. A tooth paste composition comprising in weight percent: Humectants 23-28% Binders and stabilizers 1-2% Silica/charcoal mixture 5-8% Detergents 1-3% Aromatic improver 6-9% Germicidal and anti-fermentatives 0.5-1.5% Flavouring agents 0.2-0.9% Demineralized water 50-55% the said silica/charcoal mixture comprising a mixture of micronized colloidal silica gel and activated charcoal of a grain size of from 0.2 to 0.3 microns, the mixture being in the ratio, by weight, of two parts of silica to one part of charcoal.
4. A composition according to claim 3, in which the said aromatic improver is glycyrrhizin.
5. A composition according to claim 1 substantially as herein described.

The silica/charcoal mixture comprises a mixture of micronised colloidal silica gel and activated charcoal of a grain size from 0.2 to 0.3 microns, the mixture being in the ratio, by weight of two parts of silica to one part of charcoal. Surprisingly, it has been discovered that the association of activated charcoal of the specified grain size and micronised colloidal silica gel has a synergetic, highly whitening action on the teeth, with little or no detrimental effect on the teeth enamel.
