Description

(54) ROOF TILE BATTEN AND CLIP (71) We, JOHN LYSAGHT (AUSTRALIA) LIMITED, a Company incorporated under the laws of the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, of 50 Young Street. Sydney, New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us. and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to tile roofs and to the tile supporting battens used in such roofs.
Conventionally tile roofs comprise a plurality of inclined rafters, a plurality of mutually parallel tile support battens secured to the rafters and an outer skin of partially overlapping tiles arranged in courses. Such roofs are well known and do not require to be described in detail.
The tiles are inclined so as to shed rainwater and it is customary for the higher or head end of each tile to rest directly upon a batten while the lower or tail end of each tile lies upon the head or heads of one or more tiles in the next lower course.
Also it is usual for a selection of the tiles in a roof to be held down by hold-down devices such as, for example, a tie wire or a nail. The selection is made on the basis that one held-down tile serves also to hold-down the tiles it partly overlaps. Each such tie wire, if present, extends through a lug projecting downwardly from the under side of its associated tile and is tied around the batten supporting the head of the tile. If a nail is used it extends through a nail clearance hole near the head of the tile into the same batten.
Thus it will be seen that such hold-down means are quite close to the head of the tile.
Therefore, in the event of uplift wind forces on the tile there is considerable leverage acting upon the hold-down devices which sometimes fail to hold the tail down and thus remove all restraint from a lower tile.
In an attempt to overcome the deficiencies of hold-down nails and tie wires, hold-down clips have been developed. In use such clips hook over an edge of one tile and extend downwardly between said one tile and a l adjacent partly overlapping tile to engage the batten upon which the tile rests. This has the advantage that the clip engages the held-down tile much nearer to the tail end of the tile and therefore serves better than tie-wires or nails to hold down the tail end of the tile itself and thus the head end of the tile or tiles overlapped by the held-down tile.
However, prior known hold-down clips have had to include a lengthy springy lower portion to enable them to extend from the tail-most available gripping portion on the tile to and under the batten and as a result the clip is unable to apply a positive restraint upon the tile which it engages.
With the foregoing in mind an object of the present invention is to provide a tile batten which is furnished with projecting anchorage means for attachment to a holddown clip such that the hold-down clip extend more or less directly from the batten to a held-down tile. The invention also extends to the combination of such a tile batten with such a clip.
According to the invention there is provided means for securing a tile to a roof batten comprising: a batten adapted for affixiture to a roof structure and having an inverted channelshaped body portion, an anchorage flange which protrudes from and extends longitudinally of said body portion, and.
a hold-down clip consisting of a metal strip having a hook at one end engaged over a portion of a tile overlying said body portion, and a second hook at its other end engaged under said anchorage flange.
According to preferred embodiments of the invention the batten is a roll-formed strip of galvanised steel or other metal and the clip anchorage flange is integral with the body portion of the batten. Furthermore, the anchorage flange is hook-shaped in cross-section to facilitate engagement with the hold-down clips.
By way of example an embodiment of the above described invention is described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an edge of a roof incorporating battens and clips in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a portion of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The illustrated roof includes battens A, B, C each of which comprises an inverted channel-shaped body portion 1 with a hook-sectioned clip anchorage flange 2 projecting therefrom and extending therealong.
The crest of the inverted channel-sectioned body has two longitudinally extending ribs 3 and 4 formed in it which serve to stiffen the crest portion of the batten and also function as treads to enable persons to walk on the batten with less chance of slipping while the roof is being tiled. One edge margin of the batten body is upturned at 5 to facilitate handling of the batten without the person so doing being likely to cut his hands.
The edge margin 5 is not fully rolled over to ensure that battens may nest one within the other for storage and transport purposes.
The illustrated batten may be secured to each of a plurality of timber rafters 6 by means of nails 7 driven through the crest of the batten into the rafter.
Alternatively, if laid upon metal rafters the batten may be secured in place by means of self-tapping screw devices extending through a broad, planar zone 8 constituting a part of the flange 2.
A first tile 9 may rest with its head hooked over and lying upon batten B and a second overlapping tile 10 may be positioned with its tail portion resting on the head portion of the tile 9 and its head resting on batten A.
The overlapping tile 10 is gripped by a tile hold-down clip 11.
The clip 11 is punch-formed from galvanised steel strip and comprises a body portion having a slot 12 formed in it near its bottom end into which the turned over prong part of the anchorage flange 2 may extend and a curved over top portion 13 adapted to hook over the edge of the overlapping tile 10; more particularly over the usual edge head of the tile 10 which defines one side of a longitudinal drain channel for the tile.
The clip 11 is made of sufficiently thin material for it to be able to extend up between two adjacent tiles without disrupting the lay patterns of the tiles.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. Means for securing a tile to a roof batten comprising: a batten adapted for affixture to a roof structure and having an inverted channelshaped body portion, an anchorage flange which protrudes from and extends longitudinally of said body portion, and a hold-down clip consisting of a metal strip having a hook at one end engaged over a portion of a tile overlying said body portion, and a second hook at its other end engaged under said anchorage flange.
2. Means according to Claim 1, wherein said batten is a roll formed strip of metal and wherein said anchorage flange is integral with said body portion.
3. Means according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein said anchorage flange is hook shaped in cross-section.
4. Means according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein said body portion has two longitudinally extending ribs serving to stiffen the crest portion of the channel.
