Abstract
The apparatus has a gravity separation tank (24, 26, 28), which contains a plurality of coalescence devices (48) each of which are connected to a water outlet manifold (42) at the bottom of the tank. Valves allow backwashing of the coalescence devices (48) with water and cover elements (68) above each coalescence device then permit upward discharge of coalesced oil particles into the tank interior through a check valve (74) when the coalescence devices are backwashed. A hood (78) having a chimney-like tube (81) extends partway along each coalescence device and, during backwashing, directs the oil particles against the upper tank part. An inlet manifold (22) for the mixture entering into the tank is present. Probes (114, 118, 122) sense the height of the oil/water interface in the tank. With this apparatus it is possible to backwash only some of the coalescence devices without interrupting the feed of mixture into the tank. <IMAGE>
