Abstract

1438734 Boring earth &c P SCHMIDT [trading as TRACTO TECHNIK PAUL SCHMIDT] 15 July 1974 [11 Aug 1973] 31275/ 74 Heading E1F In a self propelled, pneumatically operated, percussive burrowing device of the type including a striker 26 which is reciprocable in a housing 12 and which has a hollow cylindrical chamber 36 which slides over a piston 46 formed at one end of a tubular valve member 42, the direction of movement of the device can be reversed by moving the valve member 42 axially, the valve member 42 being held in each of its operative positions by stops on the valve member 42 and on a guide member 54 and by a releasable catch which, when engaged, prevents rotation of the valve member 42 and, when released, allows the valve member 42 to be rotated until the stops are out of alignment to allow the valve member to be moved axially from one operative position to the other. As described the direction changing arrangement is incorporated in a burrowing device of the type described in Specification 1392868. The guide member 54 is fixed in the housing 12 by a retainer 58 and is provided with a pair of grooves 60 (Fig. 4). The valve member 42 is provided with a middle stop in the form of a pair of keys 52 and with two end stops in the form of collars 48, 50. The valve member 42 is held in one or other of its operative positions by the guide member 54 being located between the middle stop 52 and one or other of the end stops 48, 50, the valve member 42 being prevented from rotating by a ball catch 62 (Fig. 5) engaging one of two recesses (not shown) formed in the valve member. The ball catch 62 can be released by moving an actuator pin 64 rearwardly 'by pulling on a cable secured to an extension 66 of the pin 64. The pin 64 is biassed forwardly by spring 68. In operation, to change the direction of travel, the pin 64 is moved rearwardly by pulling in the cable to release the ball catch 62, the valve member 42 is rotated (by manipulating the air hose) until the keys 52 are aligned with the grooves 60, the valve member 42 is then moved axially to its other operative position and is then rotated to lock it in this position, the ball catch 62 again engaging a recess in the valve member 42.
