Abstract

1436680 Self-threading reels INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 March 1974 [4 May 1973] 12088/74 Heading B8M A self-threading reel comprises a rotatable hub 10 having a plurality of outwardly extending inner vanes 32, a rotatable spool 18a mounted coaxially with the hub 10 and having a plurality of inwardly extending outer vanes 36, and means to rotate the hub, the inner and outer vanes 32, 36 being overlapped and interleaved to permit relative rotatation of the hub and spool and being adapted to co-operate upon rotation of the hub to grip the leading end of a web 57 inserted between the outer vanes 36 to thereby cause rotation of the spool to wind the web on the vanes 36. The vanes are formed with co-operating recesses 32b and projections 36b which permit relative movement of the vanes in the absence of a web 57. The hub is rotated from a prime mover via a pulley 64, belt 66 and slipping clutch. The prime mover also drives the feed rollers 58, 60 for the web 57 which is guided via guide 62 to the reel. When a predetermined length of web is wound on the reel, the end of the guide 62 is pivoted by the wound web to operate a switch 74 to stop the prime mover. The wound web can then be removed axially of the reel. Rotation of the spool also causes rotation of a flange 46 via a friction drive, rotation of the flange 46 being limited by an arm 54 and stop 52. When the wound web is removed, the spool is free to move relative to the hub and a return spring 55 connected to arm 54 causes such rotation of the spool in the reverse direction. This reverse direction is limited by a pawl 40 acting on spaced projections 19a on the spool, the pawl being positioned to stop the spool in readiness to receive the end of the web 57 between the vanes 36. The vanes 32 and 36 are located on chords 32h, 36h as shown.
