Abstract
1436546 Locking nuts; expansible anchors J K WRIGHT 18 May 1973 [2 June 1972] 25875/72 Heading F2H [Also in Division A5] A device for use in setting a fractured bone comprises an expander 4 having a shank 6 and an outwardly tapered expander portion 5, an expansible hollow rail 9 dimensioned to slide over the shank 6 and having two or more sharpended fingers 10, and a plate 15 to be rigidly fixed to the bone and having means to receive and locate the nail 9 so that it can be drawn rearwardly after installation to draw together the bone portions. In use, when the parts of a fractured bone, e.g. the shaft 3 and head 2 of a femur 1, are to be joined, they are aligned and a bore is drilled through the shaft 3 and into the head 2 to fit the largest diameter portion of the expander 4, which is then inserted into the bore. The nail 9, which in its unexpanded state has a diameter similar to the largest diameter of the expander 4, is driven over the expander 4 so that the sharp ends 11 of the fingers 10 are deflected by the expander portion 5 to penetrate into the bore 2 along paths oblique to the longitudinal axis of the nail and spaced from the expander 4. The plate 15 is secured to the bone 3 by screws 16 so that a slot 19 in a curved extension 18 receives the screw-threaded rear end 14 of the nail 9. A washer 21 having a projection which engages one of a number of serrations 20 on the extension 18, and which may have a locating tab, a compression spring 22, and a self-locking nut 23 are fitted on the nail end 14 and the nut tightened to draw together the bone portions 2, 3. The expander 4 has a bore 8 to receive a guide pin (not shown) to align the nail 9 with the expander while the nail is driven in. All components except the locking portion of the lock nut 23 are of stainless steel. When the fracture has healed, the plate 15 is removed and the nail 9 and expander 4 withdrawn using extractors.
