Abstract

1433481 Insoles for shoes BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 26 March 1973 [25 March 1972 7 March 1973] 14107/72 and 11092/72 Heading A3B [Also in Division B5] A shoe insole comprises a non-woven bonded fibre mass having a greater density and rigidity at a rear portion of the insole than at a fore part portion thereof. The insole may be cut from a material produced by assembling a first non-woven bonded fibre batt with at least one further non-woven bonded fibre batt of smaller area than the first batt and superposed thereon and subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure to bond the batts together and consolidate them in the region in which they are superposed so that they have greater density and rigidity in that region than does the first batt in the region thereof on which the further batts are not superposed. Alternatively the layers of non-woven bonded fibre batt of different size may be cut to shape prior to bonding them together to form the insole. During heat and pressure treatment the assembly may be shaped to impart thereto a shape corresponding approximately to the contour of the bottom of the foot. The smaller layers may also comprise one or more sheets of thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. At least one of the outer surfaces of the insole may comprise a layer, e.g. non-woven or woven fabric or paper, to which a hot melt adhesive will adhere. Heat and pressure may be applied by use of a high-frequency welding press, a heated platen press, rollers or heated moving belts. The non-woven fibre layers may comprise nylon and viscose rayon fibres and the bonding agent may be a vinyl chloride copolymer, optionally in admixture with a carboxylated nitrile rubber, or a plasticised styrene/butadiene copolymer.
