Abstract

1433372 Sight glass fitting WILLIAM BAILEY (BIRMINGHAM) Ltd 25 March 1974 [12 April 1973] 17618/73 Heading F2P [Also in Division G1] A sight glass fitting for mounting in pipe-lines or comprising a housing 2 having an annular wall 3 forming a chamber 4, the chamber having a port 8 opening into a transverse passageway 9. The sight glass 13 is of a frusto-conical shape and is held in place against an annular seal 11 and flange 7 by a retaining member 17. An O- ring 15 and spacing ring 16 are included, the spacing ring 16 being of such dimensions that when the glass retaining member 17 is screwthreadedly engaged with the portion 5 of the wall 3 the spacing ring 16 sealingly compresses the 0-ring 15 against the circumferential edge of the glass 13 and the wall 3. Increased pressure on the glass 13 due to internal pressure of the pipeline produces an increased sealing effect by compressing further the 0-ring against the wall 3. Alternative embodiments are described (not shown) in which the presence of water in refrigerant liquid is indicated by water sensitive paper held in contact with part of the sight glass and with partially free access to the liquid in the pipe-line by means of a gasket (20) in place of the annular seal 11.
