Abstract
1432110 Gypsum CHEMIE LINZ AG 16 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 31543/74 Heading C1A Waste gypsum from the production of phosphoric acid is defluorinated by means of sulphuric acid at an elevated temperature by dehydrating the waste gypsum by calcination prior to adding the sulphuric acid and subsequently mixing the substantially anhydrous calcined gypsum while it is still hot with an amount of concentrated sulphuric acid sufficient to decompose the solid fluorine compounds contained and to expel the volatile fluorine compounds formed. The dehydration may be carried out by heating the gypsum to not more than 500‹ C. or may be carried out in two stages, the gypsum being heated to not more than 250‹ C. in the first stage, until the semi-hydrate stage is reached. The volatile fluorine compounds obtained include HF and SiF 4 .
