1431926 Apparatus for winding packages with radial openings WINDINGS Inc 5 July 1973 32025/73 Heading D1J An apparatus of the kind in which a yarn is traversed onto a rotating spindle 2 by a guide element 6 that is pivotally mounted to allow for increasing package diameter, is characterized in that the yarn is wound onto the package in figure-8 windings, there being means for causing successively formed crossover of alternate layers to be angularly spaced around the package in opposite circumferential directions and for the total angular distance from the first cross-over to the last cross-over thereof in the direction of progression of the cross-overs around the package to be less than 360‹ so as to define a radial opening 10 in the package as distinct from the curved opening 8 that would otherwise occur due to the swing of the guide element 6 about its pivotal axis. Thus, for example, the cross overs may extend around 345‹, so that a gap of 15‹ is left in which there are no cross-overs and therefore there is a hole. The holes in successive layers thus formed overlie each other to form the radial opening. In one embodiment the relative speed of traverse and rotation is progressively changed during the build-up of the package so as to cause said radial opening to be formed. In a second embodiment means are provided for producing a slight angular shift of that part of the spindle element 2 on which the material is wound with respect to the guide element 6 after a predetermined number of layers have been wound onto the package. To this end there may be a mandrel on the shaft 2, the package being wound on the mandrel. Friction means normally prevents the mandrel from rotating relatively to the shaft 2 but when slight angular shift is to be effected the mandrel is rotated on the shaft 2 against the resistance of the friction means.
