Abstract
1431797 Brake lining synthetic resin compositions K-R BEYRER 19 June 1973 [22 July 1972] 29144/73 Heading C3R [Also in Division F2] In a brake lining element for use in a disc brake including a body part adapted to frictionally engage the disc and a surface layer formed on the face of the body part against which an actuator bears when the body part is urged towards the disc, the surface layer is formed by a matrix comprising a thermosetting organic resin and a granular solid lubricant distributed in the matrix in an amount of from 1 to 30% wt., the grain size being from 1-5 mm. Suitable lubricants are graphite, metal sulphides such as tungsten- or molybdenumsulphide, and metals such as lead and antimony. The matrix may include fillers such as asbestos, metal oxides, barytes and/or powdered mica. In the particular example the surface layer is formed by rolling a compacted mixture of a granulated lubricant and the following composition:- 10% wt. of a thermosetting resin, such as a phenolic resin, 5% wt. rubber, 1% wt. of a vulcanization accelerator, 54% wt. asbestos and 10% wt. metal oxides, the balance being made up by fillers such as barite and powdered mica, the amount of lubricant being 1-30% wt. of the surface layer.
