Abstract

1430097 Fastener feeding device GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd 13 March 1974 [13 March 1973] 11920/73 Heading B3N A fastener feeding device for screws, nails or pins comprises an elongate magazine 17, slidable mounting means for slidably mounting the device on the body 10 of a tool having a driving bit 12, a guide tube 19 having an opening 20 which communicates with the magazine, in use the device being slidable between its projecting position in which the guide tube is as shown in Fig. 1, and its retracted position in which the operative end of the driving bit is close to the front end of the guide tube. The device incorporates a cylindrical sleeve 13 which has a pneumatic cylinder 15. The magazine is slidably mounted on piston-rod 23 by bracket 22 and screws 24. Springs 26 bias the magazine against the head of the screws. The magazine may have a removable section 25 replaceable by a section full of screws. In operation a screw enters the guide tube by gravity. Operation of the motor has exhaust air passing from outlets 11 to cylinder 15 to move the piston, magazine and guide tube along the tool. The open end of the guide tube has spring jaws to grip the screw. Further end pressure on guide tube 19 when it is pushed against a workpiece forces the magazine to move against the pressure of springs 26 thus allowing the screw to be driven home. The guide tube is surrounded by a sleeve 32 which controls the size of opening 20 relevant to the size of screw used. The sleeve has a finger 31 to help the engagement between a screw and the driver bit. Spring arm 30 has a detent which prevents a screw sliding down the guide tube before it is engaged by the driver bit.
