Abstract

1428092 Expanding-pulley gear T B WOODS SONS CO 16 Jan 1974 01946/74 Heading F2D A vee pulley comprising a conical flange 22, Fig. 1, carried by a sleeve 21 mounted to rotate with a shaft (not shown) and a conical flange 24 loaded by a spring 26 and integral with a hub 25 mounted with clearance on the sleeve has a plurality of elastic pad segments 31, Fig. 5, in the clearance between the hub and sleeve and secured to one of those parts, and having relatively rigid facings on their surfaces bearing on the other part, or alternatively the segments may be secured to neither part and have relatively rigid facings on both of their surfaces. The arrangement accommodates small, cyclical, relative movements between the hub and sleeve without sliding by yielding of the segments in the axial and circumferential directions, thereby minimizing wear. Each segment may comprise a layer of rubber-like material bonded to the bore of the hub and faced with the relatively rigid layer, or the segments may be of laminated construction comprising alternate layers 37, Fig. 7, of rubber-like material with interposed stiff layers 38, e.g. of steel shim material and an outer layer 36 of a glass-filled epoxy material. If the hub has a keyway receiving a key mounted on the sleeve to prevent relative rotation of these parts the sides of the keyway may be lined with resilient pads with relatively rigid facings. Arrangements are also described in which the sleeve and the bore in the hub are polygonal, e.g. of square cross-section, the elastic pad segments then being flat members secured to each face of the bore. Each of these segments may be laminated, and divided into sections by grooves extending through all of its layers except the one that is bonded to the hub.
