Abstract

1426643 Recovering copper values SHIPLEY CO Inc 9 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 6386/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division B6] An etchant comprising cupric ions, chloride or bromide ions, and a complexing agent capable of solubilizing the cupric ions is used to etch cupreous metal and is then treated to recover copper values therefrom and to replenish the chloride or bromide ions by adding sufficient ammonium chloride or ammonium bromide to precipitate a portion, but not all, of the copper in the form of a copper salt and removing the salt from the etchant. Ammonium ions may be present as an initial ingredient of the etchant. The cupric ions may be derived from copper sulphate, copper chloride, copper nitrate or copper acetate. The complexing agent may be mono- or di-ethanolamine or mono- or di-isopropanolamine. The ammonium ions may be derived from the carbonate, sulphate or chloride. The chloride or bromide ions may be derived from sodium or ammonium chloride or bromide. The used etchant may be aerated to convert cuprous copper to cupric form and cooled before the addition of the ammonium halide. The copper salt precipitate may be removed by centrifuging, filtering or by sedimentation. The treated etchant may be heated and re-used.
