Abstract
1426351 Expanding wheel gear CAM GEARS Ltd 8 Feb 1974 [8 Feb 1973] 6238/73 Heading F2D In a V-belt expanding pulley gear wherein the speed ratio is automatically controlled by centrifugal steel balls 8 riding in channels in an inclined surface on one flange 4<SP>11</SP> of one pulley 4, the complementary pulley 2 being loaded by a spring 6, a non-linear rate for axial shift of the movable flanges is produced either by the springs 6 or the inclined surface, or both. In Fig. 2, in which the centrifugal pulley 4 is the output pulley, the inclined surface has two differently inclined portions 16<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>11</SP>. In Fig. 3, not shown, the spring 6 (Fig. 2) is constituted by two differently rated springs 18,. 20 in series, whilst in Fig. 4, not shown, each flange of the input pulley is biased by a separate spring 22, 24, the springs having different rates, and each flange of the output pulley is loaded by centrifugal balls (8, 28) riding on flange tracks of different inclination. In Fig. 5, not shown, the balls (36) are associated with the input pulley 2 and are enclosed between an inclined surface (38) entending inwardly from the outer periphery of the movable flange and a radial, or inclined, surface of an abutment disc (40) axially fixed on the shaft, the balls being opposed by a spring (42) between the abutment disc (40) and the rear face of the pulley flange. The output pulley is biased by a single spring (44) the rate of which differs from that (42) of the input pulley. The ball channels may be of changing arcuate form and may terminate tangential at their outer ends.
