Abstract
1426277 Radiographic silver halide material EASTMAN KODAK CO 19 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 19009/73 Heading G2C A sensitive radiographic material comprises a support coated on one side with a layer of a blend of, or with adjacent layers of, a spectrally sensitized surface-sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion and an internally fogged internal image photographic silver halide emulsion containing, to reduce halation, at least one methine dye which is adsorbed to the grains and is removable from the material during processing, the silver halide compositions of the surface-sensitive and internally fogged emulsions being such that development of exposed surface-sensitive grains causes development of the adjacent internally fogged grains. The methine dye may be a complex cyanine of the Formula I:- a cyanine dye of the Formula II:- a merocyanine dye of the Formula III:- or a hemioxonol dye, providing a spectral sensitivity to radiation of wavelengths longer than 539 nm. where L, L 1 and L2 each is a methine group which may be substituted; R and R 2 are each alkyl, cycloalkyl or substituted alkyl; R 1 is alkyl, substituted alkyl or aralkyl or together with L2, 2- 3C alkylene; D and D, together complete a 4- thiazolidinone, 5-thiazolidinone, or 4-imidazo lidinone; n is 1, 2 or 3; Z, Z', Z 1 and Z 2 each complete a non-metallic heterocyclic nucleus containing a 5-or 6 -membered heterocyclic ring; Q completes a non-metallic 5 - or 6 -membered heterocyclic nucleus; and X# is an anion. The surface-sensitive emulsion may be a silver bromoiodide emulsion and the internal image emulsion a silver chlorobromide emulsion. The dye or dyes of Formulae II and III may be used to reduce halation and also to spectrally sensitize the surfacesensitive emulsion. The dyes used may be anhydro- 3, 9-diethyl -5,5'-dimethoxy-3'-(3-sulphobutyl) thiacarbocyanine hydroxide and anhydro -3', 9 - diethyl - 5' -methoxy -5-phenyl -3-(3-sulphobutyl) oxaselenacarbocyanine hydroxide.
