Abstract
1425669 Electrolytic preparation of dimethyl sebacate; sebacic acid ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 23 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973 26 March 1973 3 Oct 1973 17 Dec 1973] 03133/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Electrolytic condensation of monomethyl adipate and a salt thereof to dimethyl sebacate is conducted in the presence of at least 5 wt. per cent dimethyl sebacate which is maintained throughout the reaction, with a liquid velocity in the cell of at least 2 m./sec. The sebacate salt may be with LiOH, KOH, NaOH, NaOCH 3 or NH 3 and the degree of neutralization may be up to 60% molar. The ester may be hydrolysed with 10-30% HNO 3 , H 2 SO 4 , or HCl at 90- 120 C. by adding less ester than corresponds with the saturation solubility of sebacic acid in the hydrolytic bath, while simultaneously removing the methanol formed.
