Abstract
1424953 Making suture needles; swaging; drilling by lasers AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 28 Feb 1974 [22 March 1973] 9157/74 Headings B3A B3H and B3V A stainless steel suture needle is made by drilling a suture receiving hole 16 in the end of a length of stainless steel wire by a pulsed laser, swaging the drilled end over a cylindrical mandrel 19 and tapering the other end of the wire to a point 24. After deburring a cut length of chromium nickel stainless steel wire, a conical hole 16 is formed in one end of the wire by a pulsed ruby laser. The wire may be annealed at 1300‹ F. before and after drilling. The drilled end is chamfered and swaged over a mandrel 19 by a rotary swager 18 to form a cylindrical hole and a reduced diameter end, after which the wire is polished and deburred. After forming the other end of the wire with a tapered portion of triangular section by a swaging operation, the tapered end is ground to a point 24 by mounting a number of needles in a jig which is moved relative to a grinding belt or wheel. The needle is finally electropolished before a surgical suture is inserted into the cylindrical hole and the needle crimped thereto.
