Abstract

1424200 Laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 49587/72 Headings B5N and B5A A packaging board comprises two skins divided into longitudinal strips, each strip being connected via longitudinally extending ribs to strips of the other skin. In Fig. 4 the board may be produced by forming a profile, e.g. by extrusion, which comprises two continuous skins 10 and 11 interconnected by longitudinally extending ribs 12 to form longitudinal channels 13, 14 and then dividing both skins into longitudinal strips 17, 18, 19 by slitting along some of the channels in such a manner that the continuity of the board is maintained and its flexibility increased. Preferably one skin is divided along alternate channels 13 and the other skin is divided along the other alternate channels 14 so that each strip 17 is connected to two ribs 12a and 12b each of which is connected to different but adjacent strips 18, 19 of the other skin. In an alternative method the board is produced by separately extruding two flat and one corrugated sheets of the thermoplastics material sticking the two flat sheets to the corrugated sheet and slitting the flat sheets. In this method three flat sheets may be extruded and the intermediate sheet corrugated by means of rollers. The boards may be produced from polyethylene, homopolymers or copolymers of propylene, acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymers or polyvinyl chloride. During slitting of the outer skins the edges of the board may also be trimmed.
