Abstract

1422907 Curing epoxy resins BAYER AG 25 April 1974 [26 April 1973] 18138/74 Heading C3B A curable composition comprises: (I) a polyepoxide, (II) one or more cyclic polycarboxylic acid anhydrides and as catalyst a mixture of (III) a Zn compound and (IV) an amine which contains at least one stearyl group attached to nitrogen. I may be a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, bis-(N-epoxypropyl)aniline, N,N<SP>1</SP> - dimethyl - N,N<SP>1</SP> - diepoxypropyl - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- diaminodiphenylimethane, N - diepoxypropyl - 4 - aminophenyl glycidyl ether or hexahydrophthalic acid glycidyl ester. II may be tetra- or hexa-hydrophthalic anhydride or methyl substituted derivatives thereof or methyl-endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride. III may be a zinc salt or ZnO, e.g. the liquid forms of zinc octoate or naphthenate commercially available. IV may be stearylamine, methylstearylamine or methyldistearylamine; stearylamines containing aromatic groups are also referred to. The compositions remain workable for over 48 hours at 22‹ C. but cure rapidly on heating, e.g. at 60-250‹ C.
